Deep Breath & Count to Seven is a celebration of cadence, reflection, and progression. This body of work showcases six murals I’ve created in and out of Boston. Each a verse in a metaphorical love song to the city…a song that may never end.
As I prepare for the seventh installation, this series will speak to the power of art as a portal…a portal that you could walk through one mural and emerge in another that carries the same message, while it resides in a different space and place.
These murals are mirrors, reflecting the faces, stories, and dreams of some of the people who see them, both young and grown. They’ve become more than art, they are markers of connection and transformation. Each piece is a verse shaped by the city’s DNA and the authenticity of the community’s voice, where names and characters are chosen collectively. Together, they form a through/lifeline tying — “Breathe Life” series into a narrative that evolves with every stroke.
“Deep Breath” is not just a title; it’s a mantra, a moment to pause…re-center. Each mural is a part of my journey, a visual map of my progress, and a testament to leading with intention and contributing to this city’s history. The murals highlight accessibility and inclusion through augmented reality, incorporating ASL to amplify a universal thought and communication. They elevate black love as if it were a superhero while delivering healing and building a long-lasting legacy that has gained national recognition from Detroit’s BLKOUT walls to the African American Heritage Trail in Champaign Illinois.
This series reflects the art of storytelling as an act of healing and has been told that “it’s spiritual”. Honestly, it’s my way of being unapologetically myself in all spaces. Doing my best in trying to create permanent landmarks that offer solace, reflection, and inspiration. It’s ALL a journey.
“Deep Breath & Count to Seven” is an invitation to take a breath, count the steps, walk through these portals with me and see yourself in this body of work.
The cadence of the song continues…
